Liverpool Habitat for Humanity

homeowners

Liverpool is undergoing a massive regeneration programme after a period of depression in the 1980s which led to areas of poor, cramped and dilapidated housing, and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Liverpool has donated a 2.35 acre site to HFH Liverpool. This plot is in Granby/Toxteth, right in the heart of the most difficult area, and is for new, affordable housing. The programme is also supported by the regional government-backed Housing Market Renewal Initiative, designed to bring life back to specific key inner city areas of Britain.

Habitat for Humanity Liverpool is using this land to build thirty-two architect-designed affordable three-bedroom homes. These homes can be made available to people on lower incomes, who currently live in bad housing. Habitat for Humanity is willing to work with those rejected by banks and other financial institutions by refusing to turn people into poor results on a scorecard. By viewing ‘risk’ as ‘need’, the response switches from rejection to assistance.

Finding money for a deposit can be an impossible struggle, so Habitat for Humanity enables these families to bring down costs through their own ‘sweat equity’ – volunteer labour. A range of similar methods puts the homepartner at the heart of the process and these homes represent exceptional three-bedroom accommodation that is hugely important in supplying the needs of the city. These homes are being made available in phases, as and when they are completed. Habitat for Humanity Liverpool is working towards completing the next group of houses – Phase Three – in time for the summer of this year.
