What to expect

poverty housing in Romania

You could be digging foundations, mixing concrete or mortar, laying blocks, making window frames, plastering, painting or gardening. The work will depend on the stage the building programme has reached at the time of your trip. There will always be a master builder on hand to show you how to build. Enthusiasm and motivation is what we need – no other skills are required!

Many of our host countries are less developed than the UK. You will need to have a sense of adventure and be flexible as some aspects of the trip could change at short notice.

Depending on the particular trip, accommodation may be in the form of a shared room, a guesthouse, or even a tent! There will always be a plentiful supply of clean drinking water and we try to cater for specific dietary requirements.

Health & fitness

Global Village Challenges are physically demanding. Physical disability or a medical condition should not prevent you from taking part – we will go out of our way to accommodate you. If there is likely to be a problem we will let you know and suggest an alternative (e.g. another trip where medical facilities are more easily accessible). Given the nature of building work and accessibility issues in undeveloped countries, people with limited mobility should discuss their needs with the Volunteer Teams Co-ordinator.

Minimum age

We welcome applicants aged 18 years, or over. If you are aged 16 or 17 you may apply, but you will need to be accompanied by a parent/guardian.
