Building hope and homes in Mozambique

On this 2 week challenge you will be working on an Orphans and Vulnerable Children project (OVC). The OVC programme supports vulnerable families suffering the effects of HIV/AIDS. The issues are complex and Habitat for Humanity supports the families with inheritance planning, health provision and partnering with care organisations. The core element within this is a well-designed and culturally sensitive house that enables the OVC families to build new lives.

About Mozambique
The primary goal of the project is to reduce the vulnerability of these families. Vulnerable families are in a downward spiral in terms of income, hospital visits/costs and school fees. Families taking in orphans often have their own children to care for as well. In order to reach these families quickly and effectively, HFH Mozambique has introduced a priority development model giving jobs and training to families and community members as well as building community designed homes.

Why build in Mozambique?

OVC projects in Mozambique support children who have lost one or both parents to HIV/AIDS, and supports families whose parents are sick and dying. Supporting such families is complicated. If you want to serve those in great need and experience the profound and complex nature of housing for the most needy, this is the team for you.

Your Fundraising Challenge
Built into the cost of the Challenge is a donation which we will send to the host country. This usually amounts to £350 - vital funds to ensure that we can continue our building programme. Many volunteers double or even treble their donation - the more you can raise, the more homes we can build. Give this gift yourself, or fundraise from your friends, family and colleagues. We will provide a Fundraising Toolbox packed with ideas to help you raise as much money as you can.

TURNING HOPE INTO HOMES

Marcelino Bastião is 16 years old. He lost his parents to HIV/AIDS. His situation is all too common in Chimoio. The city is situated along a busy trade route and the volume of traders and truck drivers passing through has increased the spread of this terrible disease, leaving so many children orphaned - children like Marcelino, 13-year old sister Amélia, and cousins Helena (12) and Milton (8).

Marcelino looks after them as best he can, but it’s been a struggle. But things are different now. We meet Marcelino in his work clothes, standing on the cement floor of a house that he is helping to build. This is the third one that this enthusiastic youngster has worked on as a paid apprentice with Habitat for Humanity Mozambique. But this one is particularly special – it’s his own.

He and the family he now heads will no longer have to live in a tiny rundown brick and thatch house, which threatens to collapse every time it rains. The new house will be made of fired red bricks, kept secure and dry by a robust zinc roof. It will have a living room and two bedrooms, each bigger than the entire living space they used to call ‘home’. The house will include a hygienic latrine and mosquito nets on the windows, significantly reducing the health risks faced by the children.
