Tsunami recovery update – Indonesia

Tsunami Reconstruction

Habitat for Humanity homes in Mulia site in Banda Aceh

Close to the epicentre of the Sumatra earthquake that triggered the Indian Ocean tsunami, communities on islands and all along the coastline of Northern Indonesia suffered the greatest loss of life and property of any of the affected countries.

While few Habitat for Humanity volunteers from the United Kingdom (British volunteer builders worked mainly in Sri Lanka and India) were involved in the repair and reconstruction effort, Indonesia attracted Habitat volunteer builders from many other parts of the world.

To date, Habitat for Humanity has constructed over 7,000 homes in tsunami affected areas of Indonesia.

The years following the 2004 tsunami have seen other areas of the country beset by disaster including the Jakarta earthquake in 2005 and widespread floods in 2006. Habitat for Humanity has responded to both emergencies and is currently working with communities across the country in repairing and constructing homes while Habitat for Humanity Resource Centres have been established to serve those communities without a Habitat for Humanity presence.
