Tsunami recovery update Sri Lanka
A British volunteer on site in Sri Lanka
Habitat for Humanity started working in Sri Lanka in 1994. Even before the tsunami, we were the second largest house constructors in the country. Only the Sri Lankan government built more.
Our intimate knowledge of Sri Lanka and our close relationship with many of the coastal communities meant that we were able to respond quickly and efficiently in the days immediately after the tsunami struck.
The generosity of our supporters in Britain and the speed at which many of our corporate partners mobilised volunteers resulted in our being able to send money and volunteer labour to help with the clean-up and reconstruction effort within three weeks of the tsunami.
In the years following the tsunami, Habitat for Humanity has constructed over 3,000 new homes for those that lost theirs on 26th December 2004. Our role in Sri Lanka is far from finished and Habitat for Humanity is still working with communities affected by the tsunami as well as those living in poverty in other parts of the country.
