Cameroon
The housing need in Cameroon is vast. People use whatever materials they can find to build shelter.
Context at a glance
Cameroon is a mountainous, central African nation on the Gulf of Guinea. Though it has one of the strongest economies in sub-Saharan Africa, with oil resources and favorable agricultural conditions, Cameroon still faces problems common in less developed countries. An excessively large civil service and unfavorable climate for business enterprise severely hamper its economy.
Habitat for Humanity Programme
HFH Cameroon was established in the capital city of Yaounde in 2001. Since then, 15 interested communities have been identified and national office staff have begun scheduling orientation and training. A potential partnership with American Leprosy Missions is also being explored in a community where several families affected by leprosy are in need of housing. The first Habitat house in Cameroon was completed in 2002.
