Nigeria

Context at a glance

Nigeria is rich in natural and human resources, but has had a history of political instability. In 1999, the military handed power over to a democratically elected government, but it will take years to get the country on track and help people out of poverty.

Habitat for Humanity programme

HFH Nigeria started in 2001 and began work in several communities in the middle belt area of Nigeria. There are currently three affiliates building houses in Nasarawa and the Plateau states and 43 houses have been built so far.

They are building in both Christian and Muslim communities, reinforcing Habitat’s principle of s electing families based on need not background.

Habitat houses have two bedrooms, a sitting room, a detached pit latrine, a shower room and a kitchenette. Houses are constructed with compressed earth blocks, wooden windows and galvanised iron sheet roofing.
