Samoa
Context at a glance
Samoa is a group of seven islands. Its economy has traditionally been dependent on development aid, agricultural exports and family members who live overseas sending money back home. Agricultural production is the main source of income for more than 60 percent of the population and accounts for 90 percent of exports. It is estimated that nearly 50 percent of the Samoan population lives at or below the poverty line.
Habitat for Humanity programme
HFH Polynesia was formed in 2001. One of the greatest challenges facing HFH Samoa is building affordable housing that is hurricane-resistant. The materials needed to achieve this often result in very high building costs.
