Have you seen the invisible man?

For so many of us, the festive season is a time of togetherness where we gather with loved ones, share meals, and exchange gifts – all surrounded by the comfort of home. But amid the joy and festivities, there’s a story that often goes unnoticed. A story of ‘The Invisible Man’. This is not a story about science fiction or imaginary characters; it’s about the harsh reality that far too many young people who find themselves grappling with homelessness are facing in our very neighbourhoods. In Britain, an estimated 271,000 people are homeless; a staggering number that includes 123,000 children. Yet, within this grim statistic, there exists a group invisible to records and reports – they are ‘the forgotten homeless’.

With nowhere to live, they spend nights here and there, an uncertain existence shifting from one temporary shelter to another. A friend’s sofa. The floor in a relative’s living room. Until they exhaust every option and find themselves on the street. Over 10,000 young people who turn 18 leave the care system every year in Great Britain, and of those, one third become homeless within two years. This is a tragedy that demands our attention. And that’s precisely why, with your unwavering support, Habitat for Humanity Great Britain is working to tackle this challenge head-on through our ‘Empty Spaces to Homes’ programme. This initiative breathes new life into empty, disused, or dilapidated properties, transforming them into safe and decent homes for vulnerable people. But we can only continue our crucial work with your help today.

Join us in creating a world where homeless people are seen. Together, we can work to ensure that no one is left behind, that no one is left out in the cold, and that no one remains ‘invisible’.
