Background

Over the past several years, almost every country in Europe has seen a drastic increase in the number of its citizens experiencing homelessness as well as a dramatic spike in the cost of housing. At the same time, several cities in mainland Europe have empty and unused spaces that could be re-purposed to support affordable accommodation for vulnerable people. According to a recent report on empty space in London alone, more than 20,000 spaces have been empty for at least six months, and 11,000 for more than two years.

Addressing a housing shortage and preventing homelessness in Europe requires a wide range of solutions within the housing ecosystem. That’s why, we have initiated a partnership that aims to introduce a critical component of homelessness prevention and reach more than 250,000 individuals from direct beneficiaries, to advocacy groups. To achieve our vision, we aim to collaborate with others to build an innovative and lasting coalition to bring non-traditional housing and homelessness prevention solutions to the market across Europe, enabling affordable homes to be built that would not otherwise have been.

Habitat for Humanity, and our partners are developing an approach to addressing the risk of homelessness and housing using refurbished or converted empty or under-used spaces. Currently this is related to programmes located in London, with a pilot currently planned for Glasgow. These empty and unused spaces are being transformed into supported accommodation for vulnerable communities most at risk of homelessness.

 

The Role

This role will drive the successful scaling up of Habitat for Humanity Great Britain’s work and profile in the UK. The primary responsibility for this position will consist of driving the successful launch and roll-out of a campaign designed to give civil society access to our tools and resources which we have developed/are developing, to allow more empty and unused spaces to be repurposed, and regenerated into decent social housing in the UK.

As the Campaign Manager for Habitat for Humanity Great Britain’s Empty Spaces coalition, and advocacy campaign, you will oversee, and project manage:

  • 2-4 pieces of dedicated research to advance understanding of opportunities to address the need for social housing through the conversion of empty nonresidential spaces into homes for vulnerable groups
  • The engagement, retention, and facilitation of a coalition of likeminded partners from multiple stakeholder and sector groups
  • A Coalition launch event including pre-events, agenda management, resource development
  • Regular Coalition meetings and project management of joint activities
  • The development of a toolkit of resources for prospective partners
  • A committed group of volunteers from across our sector partners
  • Planning the roll out of a roadshow of advocacy events for the following two years.

 

Job Summary

Key Responsibilities

  • Project manage the campaign.
  • Coordinate all of the tendering, delivery and publishing of research and toolkit development
  • Act as Coalition/Alliance facilitator, setting terms of reference, securing pledges, managing meetings, developing and delivering agendas, co-ordinating all actions and next steps
  • Working with Empty Housing/Empty Spaces SME to build excellent partnership relationships, and support partners with the adoption of our Empty Spaces model
  • Plan, and manage a roadshow (either digital or physical) of advocacy events, designed to increase awareness of model (can be stand alone or side events at wider industry events)
  • Work with coalition members and senior volunteers to develop and deliver recommendations and advocacy statements with which to engage local, and national government stakeholders
  • Work with our pro-bono PR agency and digital and content team to deliver a comms campaign to support increased engagement and awareness. Routinely monitor political developments, identifying any areas of concern and opportunities to influence; producing external and briefings on and concerning issues related to social housing and empty housing and empty space conversion
  • Routinely monitor and evaluate the performance of the Coalition, and its underlying objectives
  • Act as a key point of contact managing relationships with current and prospective organisations and supporting them to access a range of events and opportunities
  • Any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job

 

Essential Experience:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Experience of working in the area of building a movement/ large networks in order to campaign for change
  • Experience of building relationships with a range of stakeholders, managing expectations and responding to a range of needs
  • Experience of developing and delivering engagement activities and tools to empower people to be a voice for change
  • Experience of managing a number of project workstreams, with regular reporting to senior management.
  • Experience of delivering and managing high quality events
  • Experience of facilitating and coordinating complex meetings with multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to plan and co-ordinate a range of events to engage and support stakeholders
  • Ability to analyse data and develop information into reports for wider dissemination and presentation
  • Excellent copywriting and editing skills
