Why we work in the Bago District

In Thanatpin, Bago District, there is an urgent need for disaster-resilient housing and toilets as it is one of the poorest communities in the country.

Many families here harvest rainwater at home or fetch water from open ponds which leads to severe illness.

What will you do?

You will be building disaster-resilient homes consisting of reinforced concrete, timber, CGI sheet roofing, and bamboo technologies. Typical activities can include:

  • Digging and moving bricks
  • Plastering
  • Mixing Cement

All Habitat for Humanity entities that host international volunteers go through a rigorous vetting process every year to ensure.that they are meeting all required health, safety, and security standards as set by Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI). This includes ensuring that the hotel is safe and secure, catering and restaurants meet hygiene standards, and that the situation on the ground is conducive to volunteers being able to perform their tasks in a safe environment.

Our Team Leaders are trained to constantly assess risks both on and off of the build site. They are also fully trained in how to seek assistance if the situation on the ground changes over the course of the build.The risk assessment for Global Village destinations is performed by the Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) Senior Specialist, Safety and Security.

Medical and Evacuation insurance is provided for volunteers in the case of injury, illness, or the need to leave the area or country due to factors out of Habitat for Humanity’s control.

Accommodation

You will stay at a hotel near the construction site (this allows us to boost local jobs too!) Everyone will stay in twin rooms, sharing it with another team member. All the meals are included. Typically breakfast is at the hotel, lunch is on-site or nearby, and dinner is at the hotel or a nearby restaurant.

Travel

Flights are not included in the trip cost, you need to organise them yourself. You can arrange to travel with other team members if you wish to - we let everyone organise their flights according to their own preferences. We can meet you at the airport or hotel.

Medical

We are not medical professionals, so before you travel please consult your GP or a travel clinic about the risks associated with your destination and what jabs you will need. The Fit for Travel website is a great starting point for identifying common risks such as malaria, zika, and other diseases.

Friends & Family

Yes - you can come with a friend or as a group - the more the merrier! You must be aged 18 to take part in the build on your own. If you are aged 16 or 17 you can sign up but, you must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Insurance

All volunteers will be covered for emergency medical care in country through our insurance policy with Chubb. The coverage period is for the build dates only and cannot be extended for personal travel. Please note that this is emergency medical and evacuation insurance only and does not cover personal items or flights, therefore it is worth considering supplemental travel insurance.

I am passionate about volunteering, and have spent many months volunteering around the world on a variety of different projects.

My favorite thing about my enclosures is that I can alter it to fit whatever environment I’m trying to create. This was originally a desert setup, a beautiful one at that, but I’ve had to change it up a bit to fit whatever new critter comes my way. In this case, a setup for a Sudan plated lizard. Designing enclosures is a therapy for me. It’s the perfect balance of creativity and doing something for animals at the same time. If enclosure design is something you lack in, take the time to research and draw out the animal’s natural environment and then get creative to bring that habitat to an enclosure! I used to feel like I couldn’t do it justice, but after practicing and tons of research, I now have the confidence to bring anything to life.
