South Africa Build - Summer 2020

At the southernmost tip of the African continent, South Africa, you and a team of dedicated volunteers will build homes in rural Umgababa.

Build Dates:

25 July - 2 August 2020

Cost: £1800 (click for breakdown)

Life in Umgababa

The Umgababa area is considered as a high priority area due to a significant proportion of the population there living with special needs.

Many of the people within this community are disabled due to tuberculosis. Flooding in the region has also left many disabled in addition to increased vulnerability of the elderly and very young.

How will I help in Umgababa?

The severe lack of health services, water, housing, and electricity are plunging residents further into extreme poverty.

You will work alongside the community, local volunteers, and local workers to build safe and decent housing.

A typical house will have 2 bedrooms, open plan lounge, kitchen, and a bathroom. You will assist by laying, creating, and moving bricks, mixing sand and cement, and more.

  • 25 July – Arrival in country (Durban Airport), meeting the team, welcome dinner
  • 26 July – Team orientation and site seeing activities
  • 27 –  30 July  – Building on site in Umgababa
  • 31 July – Half day build, closing ceremony and farewell dinner
  • 1 Aug. – Site seeing and cultural activities
  • 2 Aug.  – Depart for UK or onward travel

Meeting the family and working so closely with the community is nothing short of incredible. I could have spent another year or more with the community, they were all so welcoming. Jemma, volunteer in Kenya 2019
For me, it is so important to have a house that I can be proud to hand over to my children in the future. Fernando - Homeowner in Recife

All Habitat for Humanity entities that host international volunteers go through a rigorous vetting process every year to ensure.that they are meeting all required health, safety, and security standards as set by Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI). This includes ensuring that the hotel is safe and secure, catering and restaurants meet hygiene standards, and that the situation on the ground is conducive to volunteers being able to perform their tasks in a safe environment.

Our Team Leaders are trained to constantly assess risks both on and off of the build site. They are also fully trained in how to seek assistance if the situation on the ground changes over the course of the build. The risk assessment for Global Village destinations is performed by the Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) Senior Specialist, Safety and Security.

Medical and Evacuation insurance is provided for volunteers in the case of injury, illness, or the need to leave the area or country due to factors out of Habitat for Humanity’s control.

Typically breakfast is at the hotel, lunch is on-site or nearby, and dinner is at the hotel or a nearby restaurant.

Flights are not included in the trip cost, you need to organise them yourself. You can arrange to travel with other team members if you wish to - we let everyone organise their flights according to their own preferences. We can meet you at the airport or hotel.

We are not medical professionals, so before you travel please consult your GP or a travel clinic about the risks associated with your destination and what jabs you will need. The Fit for Travel website is a great starting point for identifying common risks such as malaria, zika, and other diseases.

Friends & Family

Yes - you can come with a friend or as a group - the more the merrier! You must be aged 18 to take part in the build on your own. If you are aged 16 or 17 you can sign up but, you must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

All volunteers will be covered for emergency medical care in country through our insurance policy with Chubb. Former US President Jimmy Carter doesn’t let anything keep him down! He got right back to work Monday, helping to build Habitat for Humanity homes in Tennessee - just one day after a fall at his home left him with 14 stitches on his forehead. Find the full story on our Facebook page!
