Joseane felt like a prisoner in her own home

Watch Joseane's story above

My name is Joseane and I’m 32 years old.

Before I found out about Habitat for Humanity, I had been saving to improve my home. There were so many problems affecting the life of my girls.

It was too dangerous for my girls to play

My house is located on a hillside, with no railing so I couldn’t let my girls outside to play it was too dangerous. I also had no windows inside so with the door shut it was damp and dark.

If you fall it’s over

Whenever we needed to get out of the house, we would always tightly grasp onto the neighbours wall because if you fall, then it’s over…

A dream come true

Luckily, I found out about Habitat for Humanity. They began installing the much needed railing outside my house.

I can now leave the door open without the constant fear that my girls will fall.

Volunteers also sealed everything properly to tackle the problem of leaks, now when it rains we don’t have water anymore. It was my dream to improve the access outside my home, they made it come true!

What home means to me

My home is a port of safety, that’s how I define it. It’s being with my family, having the kids at home, being able to look after their wellbeing, giving them a safe place to be…it’s all about my girls!

When I look at my house now, I ask myself ‘How could I have possibly done all this. There is simply no way without Habitat for Humanity.

They’re amazing people, they can work anywhere and adapt to any situation. They work so hard.
