When a local woman moved into her new home in Havering, it was just four bare walls with no carpet, bedding or cooking facilities. Having already fled a difficult personal situation, away from her family and facing serious health challenges, she was determined to create a stable home space.
After fleeing, she had spent time in a variety of temporary accommodations, before finally being moved into the flat – however, the space offered little comfort or stability. Through a partner organisation, she was referred to our Community Hub for guidance and help to make her flat a functional welcoming home. Reflecting on her experience she shared:
“I am grateful for your support and dedication to helping those in need. Your work is making a real difference, providing comfort and dignity to individuals like me who are facing tough circumstances.”
After assessing her needs, the Community Hub team provided her with a sturdy bed and comfortable mattress. The assistance immediately transformed her space, offering reassurance during an already challenging time. She was finally able to find the comfort she had been without for a long time. Having a stable place to rest helped ease some of the strain she had been carrying, whilst giving her space to recover and regain a sense of stability after a long period in temporary accommodations.
“This bed symbolises a fresh start, a space where I can find peace, rest and healing. Thank you for being a source of hope and for reminding me that even in the darkest moments, there is still kindness and compassion in the world.”
The Community Hub, based inside our ReStore Romford retail store, provides women and families at risk of homelessness or housing poverty a welcoming space to access advice, practical help and opportunities to learn new skills or volunteer. It also works closely with local organisations to fill gaps in support and address housing insecurity across the borough.
Now settled in and looking back on the help she received, she further expressed her gratitude to everyone involved in a short, heartfelt message:
“To your team members, donors and partner orgs, thank you for your compassion and generosity. This gift has given me a reason to smile, to feel appreciated and to look forward to a brighter future.”
