Each year on World Refugee Day, we pause to reflect on the millions of people around the world who have been forced to flee their homes. Whether driven out by war, violence or climate-related disasters, every refugee’s journey begins with profound loss. But it doesn’t end there.
At Habitat for Humanity, we believe that everyone deserves a safe place to call home. We stand in solidarity with refugees as they rebuild their lives, not just with words, but with meaningful action.
From delivering emergency aid and shelter kits to supporting long-term housing solutions, our work with displaced communities is built on dignity, resilience and hope. Home is more than bricks and mortar. It is a place of belonging, safety and opportunity. In moments of crisis, having somewhere to call home can change everything.

Supporting Refugees from Ukraine and Beyond
One powerful example of this is our ongoing response to the war in Ukraine, since the outbreak of conflict in 2022, over six million people have been displaced across Europe. Many left everything behind in search of safety. Habitat for Humanity has been there from the outset, supporting Ukrainian refugees in countries such as Poland, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia. Over the past three years, we have worked alongside local organisations to help more than 50,000 people access safe and secure housing.
From emergency shelters and rental support to renovating unused buildings and assisting host families, our teams have worked tirelessly to ensure displaced families are not just surviving, but beginning to thrive. We are proud of what has been achieved, but the need remains great. Today, with refugee numbers at a record high and global support under strain, our solidarity must be louder and more courageous than ever.

Solidarity in Action
Every refugee has a story. A story of loss, of courage, of starting again but true solidarity means more than expressing sympathy. It means listening closely and honouring each story. It means creating opportunities for refugees to use their talents, contribute to their communities and live with dignity. It means saying, clearly and compassionately, you are not alone.
At Habitat for Humanity, we are committed to building more than homes. We are helping create communities where refugees are welcomed, valued and supported.
