Meaningful Community Support, Big Difference

A Community-Led Approach to Housing Support in Romford
A local woman in Romford, caring for her children, reached out to Habitat for Humanity Great Britain’s Community Hub for support. Having recently fled a difficult situation, she was facing significant challenges with her housing and needed practical assistance to create a safer and more stable home environment.
“Your generosity means so much and brings us comfort and relief. Thank you for helping us when we needed it most.”

At Habitat for Humanity GB, we recently launched our first Community Hub, based at the ReStore Romford store, to support women and families at risk of homelessness or housing poverty. The Community Hub provides a welcoming space where visitors can access advice, advocacy, practical help, workshops and opportunities to learn new skills or volunteer. It also works in partnership with local organisations to fill gaps in support and address housing insecurity across the borough.

After meeting with the local woman, the Community Hub team learned that she had been sleeping on the floor, to allow her children the comfort of a bed. To help improve their living conditions, the team was able to provide two beds and bedding, helping to make their home more comfortable and secure. Receiving the bed and bedding brought immediate relief and comfort to her household. It was a small but meaningful change that made a tangible difference to their daily lives. As she said: “We are deeply grateful for your kindness.”

The support also offered much-needed reassurance during a difficult time. It provided her with a sense of relief, knowing that she could create a more settled environment for her family. The provision of a bed and bedding meant that nights became easier, providing an opportunity for a proper night’s rest. Reflecting on the help she received, she added: “Your generosity means so much and brings us comfort and relief. Thank you for helping us when we needed it most.”

Habitat for Humanity Great Britain’s Community Hub continues to offer practical support and opportunities to learn new skills. Whether you or someone you know is seeking support, or you represent an organisation looking to collaborate, the Community Hub team is ready to provide guidance, practical help, and a welcoming space.

Our Community Hub is open every Tuesday, 10am – 2pm, at Habitat ReStore Romford, Romford, RM1 1HR. To learn more about the initiative visit: https://www.habitatforhumanity.org.uk/community-hub/
