On Thursday 5th June, we hosted ‘Sustainable Homes, Sustainable Planet: Housing for a Greener Future’, an exclusive online event marking World Environment Day 2025. We brought together expert voices from our global Habitat for Humanity network to explore how housing solutions can help tackle the climate crisis while meeting the urgent need for safe, decent homes.

With a strong 92 registrants, the event underscored the pressing need to address both climate change and the global housing deficit. Buildings and their construction contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, millions of people still lack access to adequate shelter. During the session, we explored how our work connects environmental action with sustainable housing in real and practical ways.

Insights from Our Expert Speakers

Guy Parker, our UK Housing Advocacy Manager, opened the discussion by sharing how repurposing empty buildings across Great Britain can create much-needed housing with a significantly lower carbon footprint than new construction. This approach supports both environmental goals and community-led housing needs.

He was then joined by James Drinkwater, Executive Director of Built Environment at the Laudes Foundation, for a Q&A-style conversation. Together, they explored how the construction sector can be transformed through the use of regenerative materials, policy innovation, and collaborative funding models. Their discussion offered practical insights into the systemic changes needed to align housing solutions with climate resilience.

Oum Phœun, Programme Manager at Habitat for Humanity Cambodia, also presented a climate-resilient village project that is helping reduce disaster risk and improve livelihoods in vulnerable communities. His presentation highlighted how localised, community-driven approaches can have far-reaching environmental and social impact.

We were proud to bring together practitioners, partners and supporters committed to rethinking the built environment for a greener and fairer future. The event was a valuable opportunity to share what’s learnings and inspire continued action.
