Thank you for your support in response to the war in Ukraine
When the war in Ukraine began, our colleagues in Poland, Romania and Hungary sprung into action. In the initial days of the response, Habitat for Humanity staff supported refugees arriving at the borders to find safe short-term and transitional shelters. In Romania, for example, we were able to provide heaters for the temporary tents that had been established by the border to keep people warm as the temperature dropped below freezing at night.
As the crisis continued our response heightened across all three countries. Habitat for Humanity supported refugees at major transit centres as well as at the borders. In Poland, ReStore provided essential furniture to stock mid-long term shelter that had been sourced for refugees across Warsaw. In addition, they set up a transit centre at the main train station to match refugees to suitable housing and provide much needed advice and support.
These activities and more have only been possible because of the support you have given us.
We want to take a moment to highlight just a few of the ways that you have helped us to provide refugees from Ukraine with decent short-medium and long-term shelter.
Musical Fundraisers
- Bristol drum & bass promoters came together in Bristol to raise funds for Ukraine. Money was raised through ticket sales to the event that showcased musical talent representing love, compassion and unity. The artists performed DNB at Thekla Bristol for free and raised an incredible £801 for Habitat for Humanity’s response. Visit Intrigue Music The Blast Thekla Bristol to find out more about how the event went.
- Musician, Jon Egan, based in Liverpool together with film-maker, Paul Furlong, and Occultation Records created a piece of music to support refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine. The track that they recorded is a setting for a piece of Orthodox Church music with instrumental accompaniment recorded at a church where Ukrainians and Russians still worship and pray together and are engaged in active fundraising for those affected by this war.
Creative Fundraising
- Long time supporter, Ailsa Bruce, picked up her knitting needles once again to create adorable Ukraine themed and Easter themed items. Each item was sold to friends and family to raise awareness and funds for our Ukraine response. Thank you, Ailsa for the many hours spent creating your items!
- Thank you to Charitable Radio who invited our Director of Development, Tessa Kelly, on air to speak about supporting refugees. During the radio broadcast, the host, Nick Ede, spoke to Tessa about the current housing crisis, overcoming housing poverty and spread the word about our work in Ukraine. This broadcast helped us to reach new audiences and raise awareness about the vital work that we do.
- Huge thanks to Kes Samuelson for creating beautiful artisanal gifts to raise funds for our Ukraine response. Gifts are still on sale on Etsy and can be purchased at Help the Ukraine by TheKestrelAndTheSea on Etsy
