Alem, a mother of two living in Akaki, Addis Ababa, faced financial uncertainty as she struggled to maintain a steady income. Each day, she set up her small roadside shop, selling essential household goods such as sugar, soap, bottled water, food, and sanitary products. However, limited stock and low capital meant her income was barely enough to cover daily expenses, leaving her unable to save or plan for the future.
Alem’s circumstances changed in December 2023 when she became part of the Integrated Housing, WASH, and Women Economic Empowerment Project, facilitated by Habitat for Humanity Ethiopia. Through this initiative, Alem and 99 other women secured loans from a local microfinance institution, enabling them to invest in their businesses and create sustainable livelihoods.
With the loan, Alem expanded her shop’s inventory, attracting more customers and increasing her income. “Before I got the loan, my shop was almost empty. The income from sales was insufficient for daily expenses and I was about to close the shop,” Alem shared. Now, her business has grown, providing her with a stable source of income and greater financial security.
“Now I can repay the loan and save some money. I cover my household expenses and pay for my children’s education”
A Stable Future
Beyond financial support, Alem has gained confidence in managing her shop independently. The ability to make business decisions and generate consistent income has transformed her life. According to the World Bank, asset ownership is crucial for women’s economic security, providing protection in cases of marital dissolution or abandonment. Studies also show that economic empowerment positively impacts women’s health, nutrition, and children’s education (World Bank, 2016).
“Now I can repay the loan and save some money. I cover my household expenses and pay for my children’s education,” Alem explained. Access to finance has allowed her to build a more stable future for her family and invest in long-term growth.

Creating Opportunities for Independence
Alem’s story is part of a broader effort to empower women in Ethiopia. Through this integrated project with partner Leo Lion Foundation, Habitat for Humanity not only helps women generate income but also equips them with business skills and financial literacy training. Moreover, the initiative ensures that repayments from Alem and other women are reinvested, creating opportunities for more women to start and expand their businesses.
