Why volunteer in North Macedonia?
Many homes in North Macedonia can often be described as “miserable” due to issues like broken windows and doors, old, poor-quality insulation, damaged walls, and not being painted for years. Poverty housing in North Macedonia has multiple dimensions and cannot be adequately defined through simple parameters. However, the basic understanding of sub-standard housing includes the absence of property rights and housing titles, as well as a lack of proper connections to water (11%), sewage networks (36%), and solid waste collection. It has been officially estimated that 12% of homes in North Macedonia are sub-standard, but it is widely known that the number of families living in such conditions is much higher. The average home is more than 40 years old, with most inhabitants belonging to different generations living under the same roof.
Habitat for Humanity Macedonia engages in activities such as building and financing homes, advocacy, capacity building, and community development. Since becoming an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International in 2004, the organization has assisted over 3,045 families with housing improvements and provided housing support services to 3,080 families, contributing to the 500,000 partner families worldwide.
What will you do?
Whilst you are in North Macedonia, you can expect early starts so that work can begin before the sun is at it’s highest point.
You will build alongside the local community, local volunteers, and the homeowners themselves.
On site you could be fitting insulation, cutting down materials, digging and laying foundations, laying flooring, plastering new walls, and more.
Don’t worry if you don’t have any building experience. Full guidance will be provided during orientation, and you will be assisted by experienced masons and a Team Leader throughout the build.
