Empowering Community Leadership: Sumi’s Story

For Sumi, protecting her community isn’t a choice, it’s a calling. In Dhaka’s crowded slums, fires spread fast, leaving families with nothing. Instead of standing by, Sumi is taking a stand.

She works alongside her neighbour, Sahana, teaching families fire prevention, organising clean-up efforts, and responding to crises. “I was raised to help others,” says Sumi. “It’s a matter of conscience.” With Habitat for Humanity’s support, she’s been trained in fire safety, first aid, and emergency response.

Sumi’s leadership is making a real difference. Her training allows her to step up when others need help most, and her community is stronger for it.

Advocating for Change

After finishing her household chores, Sumi joins Sahana and other leaders in the community. They walk the narrow streets, clearing blocked drains, teaching hygiene, and offering support to parents facing daily struggles.

“I feel happy when I can solve a problem for someone. It’s good for the community and me,” she says. Together, they’re making the neighbourhood safer, one small action at a time.

“I was raised to help others. It’s a matter of conscience.”

Sumi’s story is not just about personal determination, it’s about a wider push for safer, healthier communities. Alongside her efforts on the ground, Sumi is also part of a movement advocating for long-term solutions. Leaders like her are vital in driving change within their communities and beyond.

Sumi’s advocacy, together with our broader efforts, is pushing for stronger housing policies, better access to clean water, and fire prevention measures. Sumi’s actions are helping to create a safer environment for future generations.

Determination to Provide a Better Future

Sumi’s home is small, and making ends meet is always a challenge. But her children, Chadni (17) and Jim (10), are her motivation to keep fighting for change. “The heart of my home is my son and daughter. When they return home from school, we have lunch together… that makes me feel good and peaceful.”

Water is often unreliable, and when the taps run dry, Sumi must ration every drop. The constant threat of fire and poor sanitation only adds to the hardship. But Sumi’s love for her children keeps her determined to create a better life for them. “When there is no water, the electricity bill suddenly rises, so I only get water once a week,” she says.
