“We’re delighted to play a part in bringing Bitts Park Lodge back to life. Across the country, buildings that could be great homes or community assets sit empty so it’s wonderful that in Cumberland, through strong local partnership and creative thinking, we’ve found such a great solution.”
Building for everyone
Bitts Park Lodge was badly damaged by flooding in 2015 and has stood empty ever since. Now, work is underway to restore the building and explore its potential future as a café and community hub.
The first stage of the project will focus on essential repairs to make Bitts Park Lodge dry and secure. Story Homes and Story Contracting are providing their teams and supply chain at no cost to Cumberland Council, carrying out work including roof repairs, new doors and windows, electrical and insulation work, and other essential preparation.
Carlisle College will also be involved, giving students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience as part of their construction courses. Rather than completing practical work in a classroom using materials that are later discarded, students will be able to work on the Lodge itself.
The project is an example of what can be achieved when partners come together to find new uses for empty buildings and create lasting benefits for local communities.
