Last week, our team visited Sarah’s family home in Romford as part of the House to Home programme.

Thank you so much for coming to make the house feel like a home for me and the two children.

Sarah

Sarah’s Story

When Sarah and her two young children moved into a council flat in Romford after fleeing domestic violence, they hoped to find a safe and comfortable place to call home. However, the seventh floor flat had no flooring, leaving it cold and unwelcoming, with paint splatters and sharp carpet edging throughout. The children were reluctant to spend time in their bedroom, and Sarah found it difficult to feel comfortable in the flat while they were at school. Without flooring to soften the sound of footsteps, their downstairs neighbour had also complained about noise, making it difficult for the family to relax in their own home.

A New Home

Following a visit to assess the family’s needs, the House to Home team purchased 135 good as new carpet tiles from ReStore. Over two days, the House to Home supervisor and a small team of dedicated volunteers, including Sarah, worked together to lay the tiles throughout the two bedroom flat, covering the living room, bedrooms and hallway. The transformation was immediate. When the children returned from school, they began playing with their toys in their bedroom, while Sarah felt inspired to rearrange their bunk beds to create a safer, cosier space for them. With the help of Habitat for Humanity GB and ReStore, the family could begin to feel more comfortable and settled in their home.
