We help families build safe, resilient homes that protect them from the impacts of extreme weather.

A fragile house

In a small village in Cambodia’s Siem Reap province, Rem and her daughter Sonita once lived in a cramped hut made from wood and tree leaves. The walls were fragile, the roof was full of holes and when the heavy seasonal rains came, water poured inside.

As a mother raising her daughter alone, Rem worried constantly about keeping Sonita safe. Earning less than £60 a month from growing and selling vegetables, building a safe and secure home felt impossible. She dreamed of seeing Sonita graduate from college and build a good life, but first she needed somewhere safe for her daughter to grow up.

A new safe home

Today, Rem and Sonita sit together on the steps of their bright pink new home. Built on strong stilts to keep their living space safely above floodwaters, it has solid walls, a secure door and a roof that keeps out the rain. Inside, Sonita has a safe, comfortable place to sleep and study. For Rem, the difference is life-changing. She can close the door at night knowing her daughter is safe, and when the rains come and floodwaters rise, their home stands safely above them.

But too many families are still living in homes that leave them exposed to extreme weather and unsafe conditions.Your support this autumn could help families like Rem and Sonita take their own steps towards a safer future.

With this new home, I finally have a proper place to sleep and study. The walls are strong and fully covered, so there are no more leaks. I feel safe and protected.
