In the heart of Zambia’s Makalulu district, amidst the hustle and bustle of one of the country’s largest informal housing settlements, lives Yoanna (69).

Yoanna cares for her five grandchildren in a community where many homes are built from mud and topped with precariously placed sheets of aluminium. These homes, are particularly vulnerable to the rainy season as the mud bricks swell and collapse in on each other.

Yoanna lived in constant fear. Each rumble of thunder, each drop of rain, carried dread – the dread that her home might crumble whilst she or her grandchildren were inside. The houses in Makalulu not only lacked structural safety, but also basic amenities like windows, leading to poor ventilation and health issues.

Habitat for Humanity stepped in, and through our home construction program, we transformed Yoanna’s home. Today, Yoanna and her grandchildren live in a safe, sturdy home made of concrete blocks. The roof is securely fixed, windows allow fresh air to circulate, and a lockable door ensures their safety. It’s more than just a house; it’s a sanctuary, and stands as a testament to the power of the compassion of our supporters.

Reflecting on her journey, Yoanna shares, “I feel good knowing that my grandchildren will be protected. Habitat for Humanity has changed our lives. Everything was hard before, but now I feel as though there is nothing I worry about anymore.”
