What is home? When you think about the place where you live what does home equal?

Mirriam lives with her two young daughters in Mapepe – a neighbourhood not far from Zambia’s capital city of Lusaka. For Mirriam, home equals an early start every day, walking miles to fetch clean water. Home equals a place where dreams feel a million miles away.

She rolls an enormous oil drum to the nearest water point, where she fills it and begins the backbreaking task of rolling it all the way home.

When she can’t manage the load alone, she’s forced to pay locals to help her.

The cost? Precious time and money that Mirriam desperately wants to spend on her daughters’ education, not on the basic human right of clean water.

A Better Life Begins with Clean Water

For many people like Mirriam, every day is consumed by survival. The hours spent repairing crumbling walls or fetching water are hours stolen from their hopes, their dreams, and their children’s futures.

This isn’t just unfair – it’s unacceptable.

Despite her aspirations of building a better life for her children, there was simply no time or energy left to invest in shaping their dreams.

With access to clean water, everything begins to change for women like Mirriam. No longer forced to spend hours each day collecting water, Mirriam can now focus on what truly matters – her daughters’ education and their future. She’s freed from the daily burden that held her back, and now she can invest her time and energy into building a better life for her family.

Now that Mirriam has more time, freed from the daily burden of fetching water, she has channelled her energy into building a small business – a stand selling cooking supplies.

The income she earns goes directly toward her children’s education, empowering them to dream big.
