Programmes in Great Britain and abroad
In Great Britain, M&G is helping to scale the Empty Spaces to Homes programme to transform underused buildings into high-quality, affordable homes for people at risk of homelessness. With 172,000 vacant commercial properties across the UK, the programme demonstrates a sustainable, cost-effective solution that addresses both the housing shortage and the climate crisis.
Supported by M&G, Phase 2 includes research delivered in partnership with LSE Housing and Communities, examining the environmental benefits of building reuse and creating a methodology to measure carbon savings from retrofit projects. These insights will underpin future advocacy, shaping policy that prioritises renovation over new construction.
M&G’s support of Habitat programmes is not limited to Great Britain. In 2025, they supported families throughout the Asia Pacific region, improving access to affordable housing and sanitation through community-driven projects. This included:
- Providing home solar lighting systems to vulnerable families in India
- Creating employment opportunities for women and improved housing quality for vulnerable communities in Australia
- Renovating housing in Hong Kong to make it safer and healthier for vulnerable elderly people
- Creating a safe, nurturing environment for children to learn and grow in Japan
- Building homes and clean water points, and renovating a community clinic, in Singapore
