Build homes in Malawi!

Work hand in hand with the local community in Salima as you build safe and secure housing for a family in need of a decent place to live.

Build Dates:

2021 Dates TBC

Cost: £1850 (click for breakdown)

Why we work in Salima

Despite being famous for its Gule wa Mkulu dances, and rich cultural heritage, Salima has an extremely high housing need.

Many children living in Salima have been orphaned as a result of HIV and AIDS which has led to a large number of households being led by children who cannot afford to look after the home.

Housing poverty in Salima means that many of the people in the community live on less than $1 a day.

What will you do?

Expect early starts so that you can begin work before the sun is at it’s highest point. This means you will finish working a few hours before you have dinner. Typical Volunteer Activities include:

  • Mixing and passing mortar
  • Digging and laying foundations
  • Laying bricks
  • Plastering new walls

Itinerary (2021 dates tbc)

  • Day 1 – Arrival in country, meeting the team, welcome dinner
  • Day 2 – Team orientation and site seeing activities
  • Day 3-6  – Building on site
  • Day 7– Half day build then farewell ceremony
  • Day 8 –  Site seeing, and cultural activities
  • Day 9  – Depart for UK or onward travel

Meeting the family and working so closely with the community is nothing short of incredible. I could have spent another year or more with the community, they were all so welcoming. Jemma, volunteer in Kenya 2019

Safeguarding

All Habitat for Humanity entities that host international volunteers go through a rigorous vetting process every year to ensure.that they are meeting all required health, safety, and security standards as set by Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI). This includes ensuring that the hotel is safe and secure, catering and restaurants meet hygiene standards, and that the situation on the ground is conducive to volunteers being able to perform their tasks in a safe environment.

Our Team Leaders are trained to constantly assess risks both on and off of the build site. They are also fully trained in how to seek assistance if the situation on the ground changes over the course of the build. The risk assessment for Global Village destinations is performed by the Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) Senior Specialist, Safety and Security.

Medical and Evacuation insurance is provided for volunteers in the case of injury, illness, or the need to leave the area or country due to factors out of Habitat for Humanity’s control.

Accommodation

You will stay at a hotel near the construction site (this allows us to boost local jobs too!) Everyone will stay in twin rooms, sharing it with another team member.

Travel

Flights are not included in the trip cost, you need to organise them yourself. You can arrange to travel with other team members if you wish to - we let everyone organise their flights according to their own preferences. We can meet you at the airport or hotel.

Medical

We are not medical professionals, so before you travel please consult your GP or a travel clinic about the risks associated with your destination and what jabs you will need. The Fit for Travel website is a great starting point for identifying common risks such as malaria, zika, and other diseases.

Friends & Family

Yes - you can come with a friend or as a group - the more the merrier! You must be aged 18 to take part in the build on your own. If you are aged 16 or 17 you can sign up but, you must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Insurance

All volunteers will be covered for emergency medical care in country through our insurance policy with Chubb. The coverage period is for the build dates only and cannot be extended for personal travel. Please note that this is emergency medical and evacuation insurance only and does not cover personal items or flights, therefore it is worth considering supplemental travel insurance.

Components for the #habitatbuild keep piling up. Having all/most of the items early certainly helps determine positioning and spacing, but makes me very eager to get them in.

Why do we build? Because children who live in homes with leaking roofs, broken windows, nonfunctioning heaters or stoves, peeling paint, exposed wiring or unsafe/unclean environments often experience greater emotional and behavioral problems. We believe it’s our duty to help people avoid living like that. #HabitatFacts
