What We Do

A humanitarian organisation building homes & communities

We are Habitat for Humanity, one of the world’s leading housing charities.

As a humanitarian organisation focused on long-term development, aid and poverty alleviation, our mission is to build a safe environment where families and communities can thrive.

What We Do

Our vision is a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live, and a world where housing poverty and homelessness are eliminated. We believe that the home is a key catalyst in helping to permanently break the cycle of poverty.

To achieve our vision, we build homes, partnerships, communities and networks; since 1976, we have built more than 1.3 million homes and served over 20 million people. See our Key Milestones.

How We Do It

Housing and shelter are the cornerstones of our work, but we believe happy and healthy homes require more than bricks and mortar – – they need to be part of a thriving community to really benefit the families who live there.

As such, our programmes support a range of home building and community projects, focusing on practical support that makes a real, tangible difference to the lives of those most in need.

Habitat gives us an opportunity which is very difficult to find: to reach out and work side by side with those who never have had a decent home - but work with them on a completely equal basis. It’s not a big-shot, little-shot relationship. It’s a sense of equality. Former US President Jimmy Carter

Through Shelter We Empower

By empowering families to help build their own homes, alongside volunteers, and pay an affordable mortgage, people develop the dignity and self-respect we all deserve. In some cases, we will provide the most vulnerable families with a free house, but even then, all families must contribute what we call ‘sweat equity’, by helping with the construction of their homes.

Treating the families we support as equal partners, responsible for their own success, is at the heart of our approach to community development and poverty reduction.
